More than 10 million liters of wine are matured in the tranquility and obscurity of Cricova cellars. This is a real underground wine city with a 100 kilometers length and which is placed at more than 80 meters depth underground, which has its own streets and avenues, bearing the names of wines, which are produced and stored here.
Beginning the Wine Road which is included in the national wine route you may turn on the Chardonnay Street, followed by Cabernet Street, and then go for a run along the avenue Codru, Dionysus or Feteasca. You can be sure that in such a trip will fell up without the Ariadne’s thread, and after all this you may feel dizzy because of all this labyrinths a part of this real wine kingdom.
The name came from the name of the Dionysus, the well known protector and promoter of the art of wine-making, venerated by many nations throughout the centuries. The choice of name is far for being accidental: the ancient chronicles indicate that Dionysus was born in Thrace, at the mouth of the Danube River, said differently in other words in our area, that is the God of wine is our countryman, he is Moldovan!
According to the legend, he traveled from Thrace around the world, visiting Egypt, Syria, Phrygia, and finally, India. The god learns from the mortal people how to cultivate vineyards. He has been given from the heaven the gift to make spouting a spring of milk from the ground, honey and wine, helping in this way the people. Those who were cruel to him, he took their mind (the cases with the kings Lycurgus and Pentheus), or he turned them into dolphins (such as pirates who wanted to take him in hostage on his way to India). On the island of Naxos, Dionysus found Ariadne, abandoned by Theseus, and married her.
Chardonnay comes from the name of the French village bearing the same name, it is located in the famous region of Burgundy, from where the wine take its origins and then it was spread throughout the entire France due to the monks of the Order of Cistercians. It was in their records it has been found the first reference on the Chardonnay, dated 1330.
At the moment, the Cricova enterprise disposes 130 hectares of vineyards of Chardonnay variety. The group of enterprises is continually extending this area, because the Chardonnay variety is extremely popular, as well for the production of a wide range of still wines and as well for the production of sparkling wines, particularly the classic ones, which are made in accordance with the classical French Champenoise method.
It is notable that the Chardonnay variety is very sensitive to the environmental conditions. Thus, the Chardonnay wine presents a very wide range of aromas and flavours, depending on their origins area. For example, a Chardonnay-Cricova, which was grown in the central region of Moldova – Codru zone, differs with a delicate taste and stunning floral bouquet, with clear accents of honey and pollen.
The wine”Codru” is an original blend of two wine giants: Cabernet-Sauvignon and Merlot in the proportion of 75% to 25% in accordance. This is exactly the case when the roughness of the Cabernet-Sauvignon is softened by the lively fruit flavour of the Merlot, and the result is a perfect, harmonious, saturated wine, enjoyed by all: starting from beginners in the art of wine-making, who know only two types of wine – “red” and ” white “and ending with experts with an impressive experience in wine-making.
In this way ”Codru” is one of the most popular wines that is produced by the enterprise ”Cricova” as well on the parochial market and also on the external market. The name of blending comes from the Central area of Moldova, that is called Codrii Moldovei, where is situated the enterprise”Cricova”.
Feteasca – is an ancient variety of local grapes grown in different vineyards of Moldova and Wallachia. In fact, a generic name of several grape varieties of the same family, from which is made the wine with the same name: Feteasca Neagra, Feteasca Alba and Feteasca Regala.
In this way, Feteasca Neagra is a red variety/wine (usually dry wine, semi-dry wine or pop-wine), intense, saturated, with a ruby hue and a flavour of black raisins that in maturing becomes richer and refined.
Feteasca Alba is a white variety (generally dry wine or semi-dry) with a moderate alcohol content (11.5-12%), acidity and sugar, natural finesse.
Feteasca Regala variety (respectively the wine too), white, which was revealed in the ‘20s, in the Ardeal region, usually is a dry wine, a fresh taste, full with a special flavour and acidity.
The Feteasca variety occupies an area of 35 hectares of Cricova plantations of wineries. In this way because of the original and unique character of the variety, the enterprise of Cricova produces wine and blends on the unique recipes, being a really amazingly tasty proof of mastery of Cricova winemakers.
Sauvignon – At the moment Cricova has 30 hectares of vineyards which are planted with the varieties of Sauvignon Blanc. The grapes which are gathered are used for the production of a wide range of quiet wines, from the ordinary ones to the highest quality wines, and as well for the production of original sparkling wines.
The Sauvignon Blanc of Cricova is an expressive wine, intense, but at the same time, fine, a subtle velvety, with a strong flavour of citrus, pear, vanilla and smoke.
We remind you that on the 29th of January, 2017, the race will be held in the best traditions and customs of Moldova, where the participants will enjoy national dishes and delicious wines. The sportsmen will run under the sounds of folk music and dances.
