The Most Atmospheric Wine Races In The World

Wine races are a separate matter or running events, which take place in different countries of the world. Sportsmen come here looking for positive emotions, new impressions and a unique atmosphere. They align to the start line without thinking of a medal but «just for fun»!

In this article we will tell you about the most grandiose wine races that take place abroad, and, of course, we won’t forget to tell you about our local events which have a lot of unique features. But first things first.

Kyiv Wine Run

The closest to Moldova wine race takes place in Ukraine and is called Kyiv Wine Run. As you can understand from its name, this race takes place in the capital of Ukraine – Kyiv, on the territory of VDNKh (Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy). There are some wineries along the route that treat participants to different ukrainian wines. Also, here participants can refresh their forces with some water or take a rest.

The one who takes the first place gets a number of wine bottles equal to his weight and a tour to the Cotnar winery (Zakarpattia Oblast). Also, the ones who took the first place in men/women categories in 2017 got a certificate of participation in Cricova Wine Run – a race that we will tell you about below.

Another specific feature of this race is the costume dress code. At the end of the event, the members of jury select 3 participants with the best costumes, and each of them gets a case of wine.

Marathon du Medoc

This marathon takes place in Medoc region, near Bordeaux, France. This region is well-known for its wines and cuisine. The route stretches between medieval castles and vineyards, has 23 pit stops for sportsmen, where they can taste some of the delicious local wines (Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Latour – wow, such beautiful names!). Also, sportsmen can have some fruits, cheese, oysters and other delicacies.

Maratonul Wineathon

Despite the fact that Great Britain is not considered as one of the world wine capitals, a whole series of alcoholic races takes place here and is called Wineathlon. Its distance is 8 miles or about 13 kilometers. Sportsmen can cover the route either running or walking; the pit stops, where they are treated to wine from different regions of the world, are located at every 2,5 miles or 4 kilometers.

International Wine Marathon in Beaujolais

Another wine marathon that takes place in France – Marathon International du Beaujolais – is held during the celebration of Beaujolais Nouveau Day. Sportsmen can participate in one of the four distances: marathon, half marathon, The Rhône Race (13 km) and Beaujolais Colors – a multicolored fun run with a distance of 5 km. The route stretches along the charming streets of Beaujolais, next to vineyards and castles.

The race starts in Fleury, a town of Beaujolais, which is known for its beautiful vineyards. And then the route guides the participants towards the charming landscapes of 12 historic towns and villages, and ends at the «Beaujolais Nouveau» celebration hosted traditionally on the streets of Villefranche.

After the awarding and a short break, everyone is invited to the famous party «Beaujolais Nouveau Night», where the amateurs of this wine uncork the bottles at the same time with the rest of the world.  Jazz music sounds all night, the wine is poured into glasses, couples dance under the most famous world hits played by renowned artists.

Purcari Wine Run

Although our republic is quite small, two wine races take place on our territories, and the number of participants grows from year to year!

The first one is Purcari Wine Run which is held at the beginning of autumn, on the beautiful hills of Purcari winery, among vineyards. The difficulties encountered along the route, such as trail running, are compensated by the miraculous view of grapevines that are full of fruit by the time of the event.

But athletes enjoy not only the vineyards, but also the opportunity to taste the most delicious of Purcari wines. Along the route there are several pit stops where participants can take a rest and taste some local wine, eating fruit to regain their forces and continue the race.

Cricova Wine Run

The second Moldovan wine race we will tell you about is Cricova Wine Run – one of the most atmospheric races which differs from the other mentioned in this article by the fact that it’s hosted right in wine cellars! Only once a year the gates of Cricova cellars open to meet hundreds of participants who will cover a unique distance of 10 km.

The underground town has its own streets and boulevards, named after the wines that are manufactured and preserved here. Along the route sportsmen run on Chardonnay and Cabernet streets, and also on Codru, Dionis and Feteasca boulevards. The names of these streets can already evoke the authenticity of this little town!

And in the pit stops runners are greeted by gypsies, dancers, national singers and musicians who create this unique atmosphere of the event.

Participation in Cricova Wine Run is the best way to begin the New Year, as this event will give you lots of pleasant emotions and memorable moments! No wonder why many foreign sportsmen come to participate in this event. The last edition was attended by sportsmen from 18 countries of the world, including the USA, Turkey, Czech Republic, Finland, Austria, Ukraine, Romania and even Lesotho.

Cricova Wine Run can be attended by everyone willing with a few conditions: to have a lantern, to wear sport equipment, to provide medical sports insurance (especially for foreign participants). Event participants must read the Official Rules.

Hurry up, only 300 runners will have the possibility to participate in Cricova Wine Run which will take place on January 28, 2018!
